On starting over.
The first year after you lose him is the hardest. Everyone
tells you it will get easier. It does — and it doesn't.
You'll fill out forms with a 'widow' box to check. You'll
discover empty chairs you didn't notice before. You'll
realize he was the one who remembered all the birthdays.
And somewhere in that year, you'll start doing small things
just for yourself. Reading a book in the sunroom. Buying the
good coffee. Taking a trip you wouldn't have taken with him.
The First Year pieces are meant to mark that. Not to replace
him. Not to forget him. Just to remind you that you're still
here — and you still deserve something beautiful.
"I now wear a ring that has both of our birthstones and ournames engraved on the band... and I feel at peace."— A woman in her fourth year of widowhood
